Something like a toggle for the chat maybe? if the toggle is flipped a random time within a relatively short limit is set and once it reaches the time the LLM is prompted in the background to send a relevant message as one of the characters?

I was thinking the same thing… and have the message appear as a notification like a text message.

Can work only as long as the chat is open in the app, because the trigger must come from the user device.

You can just send an empty prompt, or just a “ “ space character and it does just that. I did add that as a system prompt to ensure the model explicitly does that, but I am pretty sure it just works out of the box
